Dear Proudly SA Members, It brings us great pleasure to share with you the success of our 2nd annual Local Wine Expo which took place at the Prison Break Market on 13 to 15 July 2023. The Wine Expo brought together winemakers, buyers, and wine lovers from across our nation who enjoyed the best local produce South Africa has to offer. As a precursor to Women’s Month and celebration of women who are dominating what is historically a male dominated industry, over 70% of the brands showcased are women-owned. As access to market is a benefit we continuously aim to avail to our members, the first day of the Wine Expo kicked off with a Media & Buyers’ session, which was attended by mass and retail buyers as well as by members of the media from SABC News to Sunday Times Live. Through this we hope to see more local wine brands being profiled and on retail shelves, as we combat the main challenge of retail space for new entrants. We are grateful to play our part and being decisive in promoting transformation of this sector. We’ve received heartwarming testimonials from winemakers and wine lovers alike, so this will certainly be a standing item in our calendar. I’m grateful to have attended SA Breweries’ celebration of their partnership with iSanti Glass, the first ever majority black-owned glass container manufacturer in South Africa. In a bid to reach their localisation target of 95%, SA Breweries assisted the new owners of iSanti Glass with the funding to acquire the plant from Nampak and have also committed to a 10-year offtake agreement with them. In doing so, SAB has essentially eradicated the twin challenges of entrepreneurs in entering the market: funding and access to market. I cannot begin to explain the importance of this deal to job creation, more so that iSanti Glass have themselves also committed to localising their supply chain as well. What a great story to tell. Localisation continues to be glim of hope for South Africa, and I am particularly ecstatic about the strides and commitment that local private companies are taking in the drive to eradicate unemployment and alleviate poverty. In July, I visited the Nestlé ESAR’s Babelegi factory who were launching their Nescafe coffee mixes local production line. Nestlé invested R79 million into this applaudable local production and I cannot be any happier that large corporates are injecting money into communities and creating jobs. IOL reported on this development, and I could not agree more with their statement “NESTLÉ South Africa has announced its R79 million investment in localising the production of Nescafé coffee mixes, marking a significant milestone in the company’s commitment to meeting local market needs and supporting economic development.” You may have seen our latest campaign which speaks to the clothing, textile footwear & leather (CTFL) sector, the 3rd annual Local Fashion Police competition. Now in its third year, the consumer-focused event aims to put South Africa’s fashion industry in the spotlight, encouraging consumers to post pics of themselves in their favourite local fashion items on social media for a chance to win R20 000 in local fashion and mainly demonstrate how they continuously support local designers who are existing in the labour-intensive industry. The entries will be judged by four South African designers, the Local Fashion Police. Our 2023 Local Fashion Police are Gert-Johan Coetzee, MANSTHO brand owner Palesa Mokubung, JJ Schoeman who is know as Mr ‘Miss South Africa’, and Otsile Sefolo of Otiz Selflo to keep the fashion brigades in check. As was the case in 2022, the campaign will culminate in a fashion show where the four winners will strut their items from their respective judge. Of course, we always turn things up a notch and for this year’s LFP, we will be adding a mentorship workshop element, which seeks to expose young, up-and-coming fashion designers to the journey to retail. We’re also looking forward to celebrating women in business with Power FM in their annual #987Woman takeover, which celebrates women who are trailblazers in their respective disciplines. For three consecutive days, the station will bench their regular presenters and invite some of South Africa’s trailblazing women, who are taking up space and making inspirational moves in society to take on the airwaves for wholesome conversations and meaningful connection with the POWER 98 7 audience. Proudly SA’s chief marketing officer, Happy MaKhumalo Ngidi will be taking over the Power FM hotseat and will be presenting the breakfast show on Friday, 11 August from 06am to 09am. Don’t forget to put your reminders on for this one as we will be unpacking localisation and onboarding consumers to support locally manufactured goods and services.
