The much-anticipated season of spring has finally arrived. Flowers are in bloom, heavy coats and jackets are being packed away, and warmer temperatures are ushering in a new season of colour and renewal. The first month of Spring also marks the commemoration of Heritage Month, a time when we celebrate all things South African and embrace our rich unity in diversity.
As we commemorate the 70th anniversary of the historic Women's March to the Union Buildings in protest against the oppressive pass laws, on the 4th of August, Proudly South African hosted the media launch of the sixth edition of the Local Fashion Police (LFP) competition.
The Local Fashion Police is an annual celebration of South African fashion, design, and creativity. The initiative provides a platform for both emerging and established designers to showcase their talent while inspiring consumers through innovation, craftsmanship, and style.
As a consumer-focused activation, the LFP offers South Africans an exciting opportunity to participate directly in the competition. Entering is simple and effortless. Fashion lovers are encouraged to snap a picture of themselves wearing their favourite locally made outfit and share it on their social media platforms, tag Proudly South African and FP&M SETA, using the hashtags #LocalFashionPolice2026 and #LovedHereMadeHere.
This year's competition features a dynamic panel of celebrated designers and adjudicators, including Ezokhetho by Mpumelelo "Lele" Dhlamini, Thabo Makhetha by Thabo Makhetha-Kwinana, Anel Botha and By Waldo by Rivaldo, who will select the winning entries. Six fortunate winners will each receive R50,000 worth of fashion from one of the featured Local Fashion Police designers and the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to walk the runway in the designer's signature creation at the grand finale on 19 November 2026.
We encourage everyone to spread the word among friends and family and to enter as many times as they wish. Keep those entries coming, and good luck to all participants.

In line with our mandate to support vulnerable economic sectors that are often exposed to unfair trade practices, Proudly South African also hosted Local Fashion Police Masterclasses in Cape Town and Durban in partnership with FEDISA and Durban Fashion Fair. These masterclasses aim to empower aspiring and emerging fashion entrepreneurs by providing practical business guidance from experienced industry leaders. Participants gain valuable insights into building sustainable fashion businesses, overcoming industry challenges, and accessing growth opportunities.
The Johannesburg leg of the masterclass will take place on the 2nd of October in partnership with UJ.
JHB Masterclass: 2 October 2026 — in partnership with the University of Johannesburg.
During the month of August, we also hosted an activation at Rosebank Primary School in Johannesburg, where learners were introduced to the importance of supporting locally made products. The activation featured exciting activities, while our beloved mascot, Lolo, delighted learners and took centre stage throughout the event. This initiative forms part of our education and awareness programme aimed at instilling localisation values among young South Africans.
Proudly South African was also invited to participate in the Jozi My Jozi initiative. Jozi My Jozi is a community-driven movement focused on revitalising Johannesburg, fostering civic pride, and connecting organisations and residents to address urban challenges. Taking advantage of the event's popularity and significant public attendance, we created market access opportunities for five Proudly South African members to showcase and sell their products directly to consumers.
5 PSA members gained direct market access to consumers at Jozi My Jozi.
We also accompanied members to the Beverage Entrepreneurship Conference, a platform designed to equip beverage entrepreneurs with the knowledge, networks, and practical tools required to build innovative, compliant, sustainable, and profitable businesses. Participating members benefited from valuable networking opportunities, peer engagement, and expert insights from industry leaders and specialists.
We concluded Women's Month by joining one of our Diamond Members, Haleon, in Soweto for the launch of its heritage-focused Made in Mzansi Campaign. The campaign celebrates local people, manufacturing excellence, and the vital role that local production plays in strengthening healthcare access and contributing to economic growth.
The campaign pays tribute to generations of South Africans who have trusted brands such as Grand-Pa, Eno, Aquafresh, and Med-Lemon, while highlighting the communities that support and benefit from their production. It is underpinned by Haleon's ongoing commitment to local manufacturing, with approximately 85% of its South African sales derived from products manufactured locally.
Proudly South African's Executive for Strategy, Stakeholder Relations and Legal, Jeannine van Straaten, participated in a panel discussion during the launch event, sharing insights on the importance of localisation and local manufacturing.
As we move into the first month of spring, we continue to champion opportunities that drive localisation, entrepreneurship and growth for South African businesses. On 05 September, we participated in E-commerce Live in Johannesburg, bringing together online retailers, e-commerce entrepreneurs and industry leaders. I shared insights on how the organisation's digital platforms, including Shop Proudly SA and the Market Access Platform (MAP), are helping to accelerate entrepreneurship, improve market access and advance localisation through e-commerce. Head of E-commerce, Ethan Lowery, also joined a panel discussion, sharing his insights on the evolving e-commerce landscape and opportunities for local businesses.
Proudly South African also joined the Creative Cnergy Policy & Investment Symposium 2026, which took place on 03 September 2026 in Sandton, under the theme "Aligned for Impact." Proudly SA was one of the sponsors of the event.
Proudly SA's participation at the event was in line with the organisation's mandate of stimulating reindustrialisation and job creation by championing consumer, public and private sector support for locally manufactured goods and services. This mandate aligns closely with the symposium's core purpose of strengthening South Africa's creative and cultural industries, which currently contribute an estimated R300 billion to the national economy (about 4% of GDP) and support approximately 1.4 million jobs.

We were excited to participate in the highly anticipated Joburg Day on 05 September in Lanseria, northwest of Johannesburg. Known for its family-friendly atmosphere, Joburg Day attracted thousands of attendees and featured some of South Africa's biggest entertainment acts, including local favourites such as Cassper Nyovest and DJ Zinhle. The event also offered diverse food experiences, family zones, and interactive activities. Proudly South African invited Boys Of Soweto, Bar Clothing and Shesha 3.2.1 to exhibit and sell their products at the festival.
Another exciting activation on our calendar in September is Kiddichella, a vibrant family festival that combines entertainment, adventure, creativity, and learning. The event includes performances, creative play zones, jumping castles, arts and crafts, delicious food offerings, shopping experiences, and interactive brand engagements.
As I conclude, I would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to one of our valued members, Aroma Spices, for securing four Gold Awards in the Best in Food category at the Food & Home Awards 2026. This prestigious achievement is a testament to the company's exceptional craftsmanship, unwavering commitment to quality, and culinary excellence. It also serves as a powerful affirmation of the talent, innovation, and world-class standards that define South African-made products. Aroma Spices' success is a source of pride for the local manufacturing sector and reinforces the immense potential of South African brands to compete and excel on the national stage.

I am also pleased to announce that as South Africans celebrate Heritage Day, Proudly South African will commemorate its 25th anniversary. For a quarter of a century, the organisation has championed local procurement and advocated for the support of locally made products by consumers, businesses, and government institutions alike. This milestone presents an opportunity to reflect on our achievements, celebrate the progress made in advancing localisation, and recommit ourselves to the work that still lies ahead.
We look forward to sharing more details about our anniversary celebrations in the coming weeks. Here's to 25 years of promoting local procurement, supporting South African businesses, and building a stronger economy for all.
