December 2023 Newsletter

From the desk of the CEO

As we reflect on the past month, it gives me great pleasure to share the many highlights and achievements of our vibrant Proudly South African community. In this edition, we delve into a multitude of events and initiatives that showcase our commitment to fostering local businesses and promoting economic growth.

Proudly South African, in collaboration with the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry, recently hosted an enlightening webinar titled, “Unlocking Your Business Potential with Proudly South African and the South African Chamber of Commerce & Industry.” This session provided valuable insights into business development tips, access to market opportunities, and the myriad benefits associated with our organisations. Supporting and creating opportunities for SMMEs and entrepreneurs remains at the forefront of our mission.

The 20th Annual African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) Forum held from November 2-4, 2023, was a significant event. South Africa, as the host, played a pivotal role in expanding trade and investment relations between the United States and sub-Saharan Africa. Proudly South African was actively present to ensure that the localisation agenda was an integral part of this imperative forum.

The Springbok Trophy Tour has captured the hearts of Gauteng, with Springbok fever spreading throughout the region. Did you perhaps spot our car as we were handing out placards in support of the Springboks?

I had the privilege of engaging with Dr. Iraj Abedian, and together with captains of industry, we re-emphasised the opportunities that localisation presents during the first CEO Roundtable discussion. Our shared insights highlighted the potential to stimulate economic growth and foster a sustainable business model. As we reflect on these opportunities, let us also recognise our duty to address naysayers and sceptics. It is incumbent upon us to champion the cause of localisation and showcase its undeniable benefits. By actively countering doubts and misinformation, we strengthen our collective commitment to driving economic prosperity through supporting local businesses.

At the annual IMM Marketing Conference, our Chief Marketing Officer, Happy MaKhumalo Ngidi, distinguished herself as a speaker. She provided valuable insights into user-generated content, using Proudly SA’s mascot, Lolo Warona, and the Local Fashion Police competition as case studies.

The grand finale of Proudly SA’s Local Fashion Police competition unfolded in grandeur at Level three in Kramerville, Johannesburg. This celebration marked the culmination of the 2023 Local Fashion Police consumer competition, dedicated to championing South Africa’s labour-intensive local clothing, textiles, footwear, and leather (CTFL) industry.

We also made our presence felt at the RideJoburg 947 Cycle Challenge, spreading our #BuyLocalToCreateJobs mandate.

We eagerly anticipated the South African Music Awards (SAMAs), where we celebrated the nation’s finest music talent and showcased our pride in supporting local artists. As part of our commitment to promoting local pride, we called on all guests to join us in wearing local attire.

The Proudly SA 4IR webinar, focusing on business digitalisation for growth through 4IR inclusion strategically convened key experts to equip Proudly SA members with a competitive edge and prepared them for the opportunities available in the modern market.

Embracing the festive spirit, Proudly South African introduced its Living Lekker Locally campaign, a celebration of indigenous and locally crafted products and outstanding services in our beautiful country. The campaign emphasises the importance of supporting the local economy by encouraging individuals to make conscious purchasing decisions and buy locally manufactured products during this peak shopping period. As you prepare for the festive season, I encourage you to fill your table with all things local.

We extend a warm welcome to our new members! Your decision to join our cause adds strength to our collective voice and brings fresh perspectives and ideas that will help us progress toward our shared goals.

Thank you to our longstanding members who have steadfastly supported and collaborated with Proudly SA throughout the years. Your dedication as champions of localisation is highly valued, and we commend you for consistently prioritising local procurement spend.

As we approach the end of 2023, a year that has brought forth a spectrum of emotions, I would like to take this moment to extend my heartfelt wishes to you for a joyous and prosperous New Year ahead. May the coming year be adorned with opportunities for growth, moments of happiness, and the fulfilment of your aspirations. Here’s to stepping into a new chapter with optimism, resilience, and the anticipation of great achievements. Happy New Year!

Whether it’s choosing locally crafted gifts, or spreading the word about our initiatives, each action counts. Let’s create a ripple effect of support for our entrepreneurs and communities. Together, we can make a lasting impact. Thank you for being part of the Proudly South African family!

Sincerely,

Eustace Mashimbye
