Whilst for some the concept of ‘African luxury goods’ might be something of an oxymoron, there is a move on the continent to correct the misconception that our designers, artists and craftsmen cannot produce items that compete on quality and design aesthetic with top global brands.
Brothers Tumisho and Lerato Masha launched AmAfrikan.com earlier this year and is populating his Proudly South African e-commerce platform with a range of African made beautiful and yes, luxury items from clothing and accessories to pieces of art, furniture and homeware.
‘Many of the creators of these luxury goods struggle, like most entrepreneurs and SMMEs, with access to market, and so bringing them all under one virtual roof creates a brand recognition for both AmAfrikan.com at the same time as making it synonymous with only the most beautiful items Africa and especially South Africa has to offer. AmAfrikan.com is an excellent platform and commercial proposition for the companies that we profile,’ said Masha.
‘All companies that become members of the buy local Proudly South African movement are required to prove they are of good quality, but an entire site dedicated to items that are elevated beyond artisanal crafts is a wonderful idea,’ added CEO of Proudly South African, Eustace Mashimbye. ‘We are all about improving exposure and providing members with access to market and here we have a new member that is assisting us with that goal.’
AmAfrika.com features companies such as Shark Tank TV show winner Native D’cor, creators of stunning hand finished home d’cor items as well as galleries of artworks from artists including Bianca Nguema who is fast making a global name for herself, on a website that is as beautifully design
