As we enter the final stretch of 2024, I’m thrilled to share with you the highlights from October – a month of impactful engagements, vibrant events, and continued support for South African businesses. It’s been a time of both reflection and action as we champion local talent and foster growth across key industries, and we’re thrilled to close the year on such a high note.
In early October, Proudly South African proudly showcased our commitment to the local automotive industry at the NAAMSA SA Auto Week. This year’s event was especially meaningful as it celebrated a century of South African automotive innovation. We had the privilege of joining a panel discussion focused on localisation, where we explored how South African-made automotive products can be more widely integrated across the continent. The event also provided a platform for several of our members to exhibit their offerings, reinforcing our belief in the potential of South African manufacturing and its role in driving sustainable economic growth.
Later in the month, we participated in the Manufacturing Indaba, Sub-Saharan Africa’s premier manufacturing event. I was honoured to speak on a panel discussing the challenges and opportunities within our manufacturing landscape. Proudly South African members, including Analie Naturals, Tanolemon, Masoil, and Ramtsilo Eco Bricks, exhibited alongside us, showcasing the innovation and quality of locally produced goods. The event highlighted the crucial role of manufacturing in job creation and economic stability, and it was inspiring to witness our members leading the charge.
We had the pleasure of attending the launch of PG Bison’s new state-of-the-art MDF facility in Mkhondo, Mpumalanga. This facility, the largest of its kind on the continent, represents PG Bison’s commitment to driving local manufacturing and supporting the South African Furniture Industry Master Plan. The event highlighted the positive impact of this R2 billion investment, which not only boosts local production capacity but also supports community development through the creation of over 150 permanent jobs. It was inspiring to witness one of our members advancing localisation and contributing to sustainable growth in the forestry and furniture sectors.
October also marked a major milestone in our Local Fashion Police campaign, where our esteemed panel of judges; Orapeleng Modutle, Jessica Jane Molebatsi, Mzukisi Mbane, and Ole Ledimo, selected the Top 40 finalists. Unlike other fashion contests, these finalists didn’t have to design their own clothing; instead, they showcased their support for local fashion by proudly wearing locally made garments. The Local Fashion Police campaign reached an exhilarating conclusion in November, with the highly anticipated finale taking place. Our Top 4 winners, selected for their passion for local fashion, dazzled on the runway in bespoke creations by our esteemed judges.
The highlight of the evening was the custom-designed Trellidor Jail, which became an iconic symbol of the campaign. This centrepiece, crafted specifically for the event, drew rave reviews from all the guests and perfectly captured the spirit of the Local Fashion Police. The event showcased the creativity and vibrancy of South African fashion, proving once again the power of supporting local talent.
We thank everyone who participated in and supported this campaign – from the designers to the contestants, judges, and partners – for making it an unforgettable celebration of South African excellence.
As we reflect on November, we are proud to have been part of a line-up of events that highlighted and celebrated South African innovation and creativity. This year’s South African Music Awards (SAMAs) shone a well-deserved spotlight on our incredible musicians, celebrating their artistry and the jobs they created. Events like the SAMAs not only showcased local talent but also supported a wide range of professionals across the music industry, from producers to sound engineers.
Similarly, the Feather Awards focused on inclusivity and diversity while raising awareness of important social issues. Proudly South African activated on the pink carpet with the “Are You Wearing Local?” campaign, encouraging guests to come dressed in locally made clothes. These celebrations served as reminders of the power of local talent and the pride we share in supporting our own.
In December we launch our “Start and End Your Journey With Local” festive campaign, encouraging South Africans to make intentional choices when shopping for the holiday season. By choosing locally produced goods and services, consumers can make a tangible difference in supporting local businesses and boosting our economy.
This campaign highlights the wide variety of locally made products available – from fashion to food and beverages – and encourages everyone to ensure their festive celebrations are truly South African. Keep an eye on our social media channels for inspiration on how you can “Start and End Your Journey With Local” this holiday season.
As we wrap up the year, I would like to take this moment to thank you, our valued members, for your unwavering support and dedication to the Proudly South African mission. Your commitment to producing high-quality local goods and services is what drives our shared success.
From all of us at Proudly South African, we wish you a joyous and restful festive season. May your holidays be filled with love, laughter, and proudly South African moments. Here’s to a prosperous and impactful 2025, where we continue to grow our local industries and create opportunities for all.
