Jingle bells, jingle bells local all the way…oh what fun it is to gift your loved ones with local gifts.
As we at the Home of Local wrap up our 2024, we will start our festive season journey by launching our festive season campaign; “Start and end your journey with local”. This campaign aims to encourage consumers with purchasing power to choose local at every touchpoint of their festive season spending. Whether it’s food, travel, clothing, or accommodation, there is a local service provider and product for every pocket, preference, and family member.
The season to be jolly is in full swing, and the braai gees can be smelt throughout the streets of South Africa. Not only that, but the clothing is also getting looser, shorter, and more playful to accommodate the summer heat of course. Many are starting to plan their much-deserved beach and bush escapes to unwind from a long and eventful year.
This festive season, as we plan and prepare for izi-big days, let us have local businesses, their owners, and employees at the forefront of our minds. Why is that you ask? Because you and your loved ones, in both the private and public sectors, have the power to change the economy and help reduce the triple threat of inequality, poverty, and unemployment by purchasing locally manufactured goods and services.
There is power in putting your money where your heart is, and we hope your heart is in the hopes for a better future for yourselves and all South Africans. To showcase the power of the notes and coins in your pocket, take a journey with us through the value chain of a local festive season.
Sit back, relax, with a glass full of Yamma Gemmer, and let’s unwrap the gift of local together. Imagine yourself booking a Lift SA flight or booking a car with Avis car rentals to journey through the scenic garden route or the rolling hills of the Drakensberg. As you journey in a locally manufactured Mercedes Benz C200, remember to fill up at any Sasol filling station and stock up on some local snacks such as Miante nuts, Rrraw chocolate, Twizza for the fizzy drink lovers and Switch energy drinks for the driver as the family reaches their dream destination.
When you touch base at your dream destination, you check into the Southern Sun hotel of your choice, where service and quality are guaranteed. As the family unpacks their luggage for the week, Mom ensures that the matching Christmas lunch outfits from Imprint ZA are hung in the closet waiting for the special day. Once the feast rolls around you’re already salivating at the thought of the Grainfields roasted chicken with fresh veggies from Veg On The Go. And what’s lunch without a bottle of Zoetendaal wine to savour the array of flavours dancing on your tongue. Dessert would be a special treat from chef Mahlomola Thamae from TM Innovations to end the lunch on a sweet note.
And for everyone who will be enjoying their festive season at home, with some lekker vleis, starch, and salad, the crisp Corona® Cero Sunbrew, a zero-alcohol beer will help bring the meal together. And for our city makoti’s who would rather sip on some Tolokazi Beer than prepare a whole festive feast on Christmas, The Unorthodox Chef has a variety of traditionally inspired meals, to satisfy every appetite. And don’t forget that bucket of scones and a tub of biscuits from Mokgalaka Creations for those uninvited visitors.
Proudly SA prides itself in being the gift that keeps giving and what better way to reward consumers for buying local than by launching our annual Stokvel competition? So, if you’re a part of a Stokvel that buys local and can prove to us that they are a part of the buy local movement, then you stand a chance of winning R10 000!
Before Januworry sneaks around the corner and catches us off guard, use the season of giving to support local businesses for all your back-to-school needs. From backpacks to lunchboxes, find everything you need from a local business and make the school year special by shopping local. We’re also screaming at the top of our lungs that cabbage must fall and we promise that if you enter our Cabbage challenge and wow us with a salivating cabbage recipe, no JanuWorry blues will enter your home.
This is just a glimpse into the massive value chain of the South African festive season, which is a period where South African consumers spend the most money. We at Proudly South African are not only asking the nation to buy local during the festive season but we are encouraging consumers to start and end their journey with local.

About Proudly South African:
Proudly South African is the country’s official Buy Local campaign seeking to stimulate much-needed job creation and retention in our country through the lobbying for and promotion of local goods, services, and industries. The organisation lobbies the public and private sectors to increase their levels of local procurement through their supply chain structures and encourages consumers to do so through changing their purchasing habits. Proudly SA is a membership-based organisation, and only companies that have been audited and approved are entitled to carry the logo, which symbolises the adherence of that product or service to required local-content thresholds and quality standards.
